Light Switch Replacement Procedure

editTo safely replace a faulty, damaged or outdated light switch.
Procedure
edit1. Confirm The Circuit
edit- Identify the switch and the light(s) it controls.
- Check whether it is a 1-way, 2-way or intermediate switch.
2. Isolate The Circuit
edit- Follow the JME Safe Isolation Procedure.
- Lock off and prove dead before starting work.
3. Remove The Existing Switch
edit- Remove the faceplate.
- Check the condition of the conductors.
- Look for signs of overheating, loose connections or damaged insulation.
- Take a photo if required before disconnecting.
4. Fit The New Switch
edit- Transfer conductors to the correct terminals.
- Tighten all terminals securely.
- Ensure earth conductors are correctly terminated.
- Avoid trapping cables when refitting.
5. Restore Supply
edit- Remove lock off equipment.
- Re-energise the circuit.
- Check the switch operates correctly.
6. Final Checks
edit- Ensure the switch is secure and level.
- Check the controlled light fitting operates correctly.
- Clean the work area.
- Advise the customer that work is complete.

- Incorrectly wired 2-way switching
- Damaged conductors
- Overheated terminals
- Missing CPC connections
