Y-Plan Heating System Wiring Reference

edit

Overview

edit

Y-Plan systems use a single 3-port motorised valve to control heating and hot water from one boiler.

Main Components

edit
  • Boiler (with heating demand input)
  • Programmer / timer
  • Room thermostat
  • Cylinder thermostat
  • 3-port motorised valve (mid-position valve)
  • Pump (usually external or boiler-integrated)
  • Junction box (commonly wiring centre)

---

System Operation

edit
  • Heating and hot water are controlled via one valve.
  • Valve position determines flow direction:
    • Heating only
    • Hot water only
    • Both (mid position)
  • End switch in valve sends demand signal to boiler.

---

Wiring Concept (Signal Flow)

edit
  • Programmer supplies switched live to heating/hot water circuits
  • Thermostats act as interrupt/control devices
  • Valve end switch triggers boiler fire

---

Key Wiring Points

edit
  • Heating ON signal → room thermostat → valve motor
  • Hot water ON signal → cylinder thermostat → valve motor
  • Valve end switch → boiler call for heat terminal
  • Neutral commoned in wiring centre
  • Earth continuity maintained throughout system

---

Common Fault Areas

edit
  • Valve motor failure (no movement)
  • Stuck mid-position valve
  • Incorrect thermostat wiring
  • No boiler interlock (constant firing)
  • Failed end switch inside valve
  • Poor neutral connections in junction box

---

Notes

edit
  • Always confirm wiring centre layout before altering wiring.
  • Valve wiring colours vary by manufacturer (check actuator label).
